First Day in Talkeetna

Land of Sun

I spent the last three days in Seattle with Margot, finalizing gear preparation and packing. I had dinner with my friends John and Erin from Snohomish and then Margot's parents on the last night. I took a 7am flight to Anchorage, landed at 9:30, bought some food and got passport photos for my insurance card for India. I caught a 3pm bus to Talkeetna. The roads were in low valleys and the views weren't good. I slept most of the time. The bus dropped me off at Talkeetna Alaska Lodge, which had a great view. Professor Wygal picked me and and we went to our temporary camp where the other students were gathered. We went downtown to get pizza.

Getting Things Ready

View Around the World 2011 on cazvan's travel map.

I will be traveling quite a bit over the next year. In two weeks I am going to Talkeetna for archaeology field school through Adelphi University in New York. I am stopping over in Seattle for four days to visit Margot on the way. I am excited to see her. After the field school ends on June 24, I am going back to Kasilof to start commercial fishing with my dad. Fishing will end around mid August.

In late August I have a three day orientation in London to spend the rest of the semester in Bodhgaya, Bihar, India. Bodhgaya is a rural town and a center of importance for Buddhism. Buddha became enlightened under the bodhi tree in the town. I will be living in a Burmese Vihar monastery studying Buddhist religious practice, philosophy and contemporary anthropology.

It's a beautiful morning in Saratoga Springs and I have one more paper due on Friday before the semester is over. The pictures show the Susitna River Valley and the site of my research.
